— Born out of necessity and evolved into artistry, the origins
and refinement of nutcrackers carves a captivating history. No
other collectible or tool has shown such a diversity of materials
and The Art & Character of Nutcrackers is an enchanting visual account of the distinct styles, materials, and birthplaces of these hand-held pieces of art. From ornate sterling silver designs to simply-carved wooden toys, nutcrackers embody creativity and culture from across the globe. These handsomely crafted nutcrackers are part of a 5,000-piece collection housed in the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. Dedicated to preserving the rich history of the nutcracker, the entire collection including the Bavarian-style building have been donated to the National Heritage Foundation to ensure that the collection will remain in tact for generations. ARLENE WAGNER became interested in nutcrackers in the late 1960s when she purchased some for her dance studio. She and her husband George have been collecting nutcrackers ever since. In 1995 they founded The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. She lives in Leavenworth, Washington, where she serves as president of Ms. Arlene, Inc. An accomplished dancer, Arlene has held several prominent positions throughout her career including director of Arlene’s Studio of Dance, artistic director of Ballet Les Jeunes in Renton, Washington, and president of the Pacific Northwest chapter of Dance Masters of America.
