We are always asked where we find such unusual nutcrackers to add to the collection when we seem to have so many different ones.  We credit the wonderful antique dealers from all over the world who are constantly looking for us.  Now that our book is out, it will be easy for them to compare a new “find” with what is already on display.  Here is a sampling of recent acquisitions…

We got a call several days ago from an antique dealer from the Mid-western part of the United States who said she had several pieces that may interest us.  In 3 hours we had packed our bag, gotten hotel reservations, filled the gas tank, got a replacement for the museum hours, and were off on the 5 hour trip to Portland where she was participating in a large antique show.  This rooster and bull, no doubt of Swiss origin, were being saved for us.

An email came from Italy several months ago, with pictures of a fabulous peacock, origin and date unknown, but my guess would be Italian, 19th C.  This dealer had also found the farmer that was featured in an earlier column.

It is not unusual to get a call around 2:30 in the morning from a dealer from the Netherlands who at the moment was attending an antique show.  The large wooden screw of various woods he found in England.  Can you imagine trying to make a decision about a nutcracker like this with a verbal description over the telephone?  Or about the carved figural also that he found?
